The match safe with repoussé design depicting a tiger with football to front, enameled Princeton school crest and year 1899 to reverse, inscribed WW Roper, hinged lid, match strike to bottom.

This match safe commemorates the 11-10 victory of the Princeton Tigers over Yale in the final game of the 1899 season. Roper went on to become the head football coach at the Virginia Military Institute (1903-1904), the University of Missouri (1903-1904), Swarthmore College (1915-1916), and Princeton (1906-1908, 1910-1911, 1919-1930). A 1951 inductee into the College Football Hall of Fame, Roper's legacy continues to this day with Princeton's annual award of the William Winston Roper Trophy.
