    Literature and Illustrated:

Shapiro, Neil. "Gorham's Enamel Signature Match Safe #90." International Match Safe Association 13.3 (2011): 6-8.

    According to Shapiro,
"A work sheet found in the Gorham Archives at the John Hay Library at Brown University appears to indicate that in 1865 the Gorham Manufacturing Co. of Providence, RI made a match safe with a enameled calling card on the front side. This may have been the first enameled match safe made in the U.S.A. On the safe itself, the name, in script, on the front of the calling card in "B. R. Swoope" and below his name are the words "Sanford, Fla." "Southern Express Co." is engraved on the side edge of the match safe... In 1879, Swoope and others formed the South Florida Railroad Co., with the main offices in Sanford, Florida. The railroad would eventually run from Sanford via Orlando to the southwest Gulf Coast at Charlotte Harbor Florida."
