    LITERATURE:
    Cf. A. S. Levetus, "Austrian Architecture and Decoration," The Studio Yearbook of Decorative Art, 1913, p. 212, for two related Prutscher tea and coffee services;
    M. Boeckl, Otto Prutscher: 1880-1949, Wien, 1997, p. 39;
    C. Benton, T. Benton, and G. Wood, eds., Art Deco 1910-1939, London, 2003, p. 97, for a very closely related Prutscher tea and coffee service in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

    Otto Prutscher, architect, designer and professor, was born in Vienna on July, 4, 1880. Prutscher initially trained in his father's cabinet making firm. He received formal instruction between 1897-1901 at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts where he met Josef Hoffmann. In 1907 he began designing for the Weiner Werksatte where he became a shareholder in 1914. He was also a founding member of the Austrian Werkbund in 1912.

    Prutcher is primarily remembered today for his avant-garde designs associated with the Weiner Werkstatte and for his close association with Josef Hoffmann. His designs were, however, not confined the Werkstatte and he became a prolific contributor to a number of Austrian firms producing silver goods, lighting and fixtures. The present lot is closely related to a tea and coffee service in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Both services were manufactured by J. C. Klinkosh and share a similar scale and refined modernist slant on classical motifs. While exquisitely crafted of sumptuous materials, both services have a measure of restraint, free from decorative excess, which imbues them with a sense of timeless modernity.

    Estimate: $20,000 - $30,000.
