    The box carries marks for Carl Johan Tegelsten (maker), Dmitri Tverskoy (assaymaster), and Nicholls & Plincke (retailer.)

    The elongated box having hinged and domed lozenge lid with repeating border accompanied by sloped lower section, gilt interior, front with crowned initials of the Grand Duchess within a cartouche to lower apron, the back with Romanov Imperial double-headed eagle below crown, columns in relief to corners with figural lion heads to bases, raised on four double lion-paw feet.

    Nicholas I's eldest daughter, Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna (1819-1876), married Maximilian de Beauharnais, Duke of Leuchtenberg (1817-1852) in 1839. Her union with the grandson of Napoleon's wife, Josephine, was severely criticized by many Russians, who had memories of the Corsican upstart's invasion 27 years earlier in 1812. Nevertheless, the couple made their home in Russia, and Nicholas I granted Maximilian the title of Imperial Highness.

    Condition Report*:

    Box does not sit flush on even surface, minor pin dents, linear scratch to reverse, otherwise presenting very well wtih surface scratches commensurate with age, polishing, and use.
