An Important Georg Roth & Co. German Silver Wine Cooler after Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier, Hanau, Germany, circa 1895
    Marks: (pseudo-French marks)
    9-7/8 inches high x 12 inches wide (25.1 x 30.5 cm)
    71.28 troy ounces

This design was inspired by a 1748 engraving by Juste Aurele Meissonnier, illustrated on plate 58 in the Oeuvre de Juste-Aurele Meissonnier. Identical examples to the present lot are held in the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Royal Ontario Museum.

The wine cooler with slightly everted rim, engraved banded collar, winged and crowned cartouches to each side bearing French coat-of-arms for Louis-Henri de Bourbon, the Prime Minister under Louis XV, chased and repoussé floral festoons flanking cartouches, handle mounts of mermaids with elongated tails in relief wrangling sea serpents in each hand, lower bulbous waist with chased and repoussé scenes of Neptune on chariot pulled by beasts, one engraved JTG, down to rounded layered base with bead-and-dart collar, terminating on short rounded pedestal.

Note: The first two pseudo-marks are imitations of 18th century French poincons-- the "crowned A" a Paris charge mark and the "crowned P" a Parisian maison commune mark of 1784.
