    A HANAU SILVER AND SILVER GILT CENTER BOWL
    Maker unidentified, Hanau, Germany, circa 1897-1898
    German marks: G (under crown), (grape cluster), (double headed eagle);
    English marks: (lion passant), (leopard's head), JS, b, F
    11 x 13 x 7-1/4 inches (27.9 x 33.0 x 18.4 cm)
    48.39 troy ounces

    The asymmetrical shell shape center bowl with reticulated scroll border, the body with floral swags centering scenes of a courtly couple in a landscape, with cast and applied cherubs, one with mandolin and another holding a song book and singing at the back, and another cherub facing forward at the front, the whole raised on three reticulated scroll feet, gilt interior. Bearing English import marks for John George Smith, London, circa 1897-1898.
