The presentation tube with two engravings of differing periods, original engraving: Presented to Major Andrew Mitchell Stuart, Royal Engineers, by the Members of the United Service Club, Simla 1901, with five signatures; secondary engraving: Presented to Jack P. Burrus Jr., President Burrus Mills, Inc., by the Board of Directors 1959, with eight signatures; interior of lid with applied velvet roundel embossed in gold Cooke & Kelvey, DIAMOND MERCHANTS, GOLDSMITHS & JEWELLERS, CALCUTTA & SIMLA.
The lot includes two presentation documents related to the Burrus family. One document was given on behalf of the Tex-O-Kan Flour Mills Company in memory of J. Perry Burrus. The second document was given on behalf of the Board of Directors, Burrus Mills, Incorporated to Jack Perry Burrus, Jr., signed by W.W. Overton, Jr. and Robert L. Thornton.
Robert Lee Thornton was a businessman and philanthropist who also served as the mayor of Dallas from 1953-1961. He served as president of the Dallas Chamber of Commerce when the city hosted the Texas Centennial Exposition in 1936, and later served as the president of the State Fair of Texas from 1945-1960. Thornton was a strong advocate for improving Dallas' infrastucture and was instrumental in garnering support for the Forney Dam project on Lake Ray Hubbard and supervised improvements at Love Field airport.
Cooke and Kelvey has operated in India since its foundation in 1858 while under colonial rule of Great Britain.
Varying degrees of scratching throughout, reticulating banding to opening end with movement, very light pin dents, some minor spots of pitting, with wear commensurate with age, polishing, and use.
