    An Important John Burt Colonial American Silver Tankard with Swan Family Provenance, circa 1735

    The tankard having stepped domed lid with finial, tapering body with banded waist, front engraved The Gift of John Swan who Died May 1 1743 AE 75 To his Son John Swan, simple scrolled handle with foliate flourish to thumbrest, raised on stepped base, double marked in cartouche to left and right side of handle.

    John Swan (1668-1743) was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts and moved to Stonington, Connecticut, around 1703-06, where he and his wife Susanna Eastman (Wood) Swan raised seven children. She married her first husband, Thomas Wood, May 16, 1693, who was killed along with their daughter by marauding Native Americans, March 15, 1697. John (1700-1781), their first-born son, was presented the tankard on May 1, 1743.

    Accompanying this lot is an early family document drafted by John Swan's (1700-1781) grandson John (1788-1818) which describes the life of John Swan (1688-1743), the original owner of this tankard, an excerpt of which reads: "...when a Child had a little drum which he beat uppon when the indians attacted the house of his father as it was the mother of my grand father they wanted as they had murdered he first husband a taylor and one Child and they took her prisoner and kept her on year and ten months when he escaped in exchanging prisoners She came to haveril then Wido where she married this Crazy headed John Swan..."




    Condition Report*:

    Varying degrees of errant nicking and scratching, some waviness throughout, minor errant pin dents, some waviness to lid flange, short linear dent to lid ridge, with wear commensurate with age and use. Document with creases and fragility at margins.
