The bowl having hand-hammered honeycomb texture throughout, wavy lap-over-edge rim, applied name and date inscription with acid-etched embellishment Lydia Ballou Almy. Nov. 5th. 1881, interior bowl with gilt wash, underside engraved From her Great Aunt Lydia Ballou Young; the underplate with hand hammered surface and undulating rim, applied insects and foliage to border, engraved to underside Lydia Ballou Almy, From her Great Aunt, Lydia Ballou Young, Nov 5th 1881. Plate measures 5-5/8 inches diameter.
Lydia Ballou Almy was the wife of Admiral Wilson Brown and a Washington society hostess renowned for her Oriental-themed parties during the 1920's. Her great aunt, Lydia Ballou Young, who gave her the set, was married to John Young who was a founding partner of Tiffany & Co.
With surface scratches indicative of age, use and polishing.
