The covered trophy cup presented to George Pynchon is inscribed This trophy presented by, The New York Yacht Club, to, George M. Pynchon, owner of the Sloop, "Istalena", in recognition of Istalena's winning, The King's Cup, at Newport, August 7th, 1919.
Mr. Pynchon was a wealthy New York business man and a member of the New York Yacht Club during the early 20th century. His sloop the Istalena won the above award in 1909 and the Glen Cove Cup in 1912.
The lot includes a leather bound album with plates depicting the Istalena and Vasanta.
Rubbing of the gilt finish to the edge of the lid, through the raised embellishments, and a spot to the middle of the inscription, otherwise with light surface scratches indicative of age and use, heavier wear to the leather album cover.
