The silver presentation flask featuring engraved decoration of the Batopilas mines, applied saguaro cacti to the sides, and acid etched inscription Alex Shepherd, Hallett Killbourn, 1888 below Shepherd's portrait.

This flask belongs to a group of fifteen known examples commissioned by the former Governor of the District of Columbia and entrepreneur Alexander Shephard from the Gorham Manufacturing Company in 1887. These specially produced pieces were presented by Shepherd to friends and associates in prominent positions as promotional gifts using silver mined from his fabulously successful Mexican silver mine venture in the town of Batopolis in the Chihuahua State, Mexico.

The recipient of this particular flask was Hallet Kilbourn, a notorious Washington D.C. real estate broker and president of the Washington Critic News. Kilbourn helped organize a gala parade attended by some 100,000 individuals in celebration of a return visit by Shepherd to Washington on October 6, 1887.

    Estimate: $15,000 - $25,000.
