DescriptionAn Impressive Silver Philadelphia Yacht Club Nautical Presentation Punch Bowl and Ladle, attributed to Dominick & Haff, New York, circa 1904
Marks to bowl: J.E. CALDWELL & CO, 925 STERLING 1000, PHILADELPHIA, S5636; Marks to ladle: (rectangle-circle-diamond), STERLING, J.E. CALDWELL & CO
10-7/8 inches high x 17-1/2 inches diameter (27.6 x 44.5 cm) (bowl)
140.82 troy ounces
The bowl having finely detailed rope border to rim embellished by square knots above front and back, front exhibiting acid-etched cartouche depicting the 130 ft steam yacht Giralda, the flagship of the Philadelphia Yacht Club, cartouche flanked by repoussé kelp strands, downward to enameled flags and naval ensigns inset with the keystone from the state seal of Pennsylvania, reverse of bowl with applied gold ALE monogram below knot, with stylized acid-etched presentation inscription Presented to COMMODORE ABRAHAM L. ENGLISH, February 3, 1904, By his friends in the Philadelphia Yacht Club, bowl raised on circular base with four figured sea beast heads to cardinal corners set among conforming rope border; ladle with rope decoration to stem and terminal, ground acid-etched GIRALDA.
Abraham Lincoln English served as fleet commodore at the Philadelphia Yacht Club before rising to the elected rank of Commodore in 1900. Lincoln served as Commodore until 1904, and this bowl was likely presented as a commemorative parting gift.
Note: While the bowl is stamped J.E. Caldwell, this mark is only in relation to the firm's retail capacity of the bowl. Around 1860, Caldwell & Co. abandoned silver manufacturing in favor of a shift towards its profitable retailing capabilities. The matching ladle to the bowl, with marks for Dominick & Haff exhibits identical rope work and acid-etching to its stem and terminal, placing a reasonable attribution of the bowl's maker to Dominick & Haff.
