Description
Prince and Princess Alexander Romanoff: A Russian Icon of the Vladimir Mother of God18th century
7 x 4-1/4 inches (17.8 x 10.8 cm)
PROVENANCE:
Princess Nikita Alexandrovich, Countess Woronzow-Dashkow;
Prince and Princess Alexander Romanoff;
Princess Maria Romanoff.
The Orthodox tradition of parents presenting icons to their children on the day of their wedding did not vanish with the revolution. This icon of the Vladimir Mother of God was presented to Prince Alexander Romanoff and his wife, born Princess Maria Immaculata Valguarnera di Niscemi on their wedding day at Cannes in 1971. The couple were married first in a civil service in New York, and later at the Russian Church of St. Michael the Archangel, which long had Romanoff family associations.
The inscription on the back, placed there by the groom's mother, born Countess Maria Illarionovna Vorontsov-Dashkov, reads: "Save and protect oh Lord / Parents' blessings / Christ bless the wedding of / Alexander and Maria / through the intercession of the Queen of Heaven / 1971, Cannes 18 July".
It is of note that the couple were married on the anniversary of the assassination of the Imperial family at Ekaterinburg, July 17/18, 1917.
