Fabergé's connection to the 1911 Coronation of King George V and Queen Mary reflects the firm's position at the heart of Europe's royal network. Though not a British court jeweler, Fabergé's London branch supplied gifts and presentation pieces to the royal family and aristocracy on the occasion of the coronation. A rock crystal vase engraved with the royal arms and coronation date, presented to the King and Queen and now in the Royal Collection, is a fine example of this relationship.
The offered lot, from the same circa 1911 period, was likely intended as a gift from the King, and research indicates that this is part of a series of eight other cigarette cases by Hollming commissioned at this time.
