    Towle: A PAIR OF AMERICAN SILVER MOUNTED MARBLE CANDLESTICKS (Mark of Towle, Newburyport, Massachusetts)

    Each circular sterling base chased with art nouveau scroll work, decorated with a beaded edge and laurel band, supporting a tall white and grey variegated marble column with laurel wreaths, swags and two detailed Faun busts mounted mid-column, surmounted by a removable fluted and bead-edge bobeche, the candlesticks possibly commissioned or created for the 100th anniversary celebrating the birth of Nathaniel Hawthorne, the celebrated American author of The Scarlet Letter, The House of The Seven Gables, and The Marble Faun, Hawthorne was born in Massachusetts, the location of Towle Silversmiths, these candlesticks provide the only example of American silver mounted marble candlesticks we have seen or heard of, marked undersides
