This urn was presented to Vice Admiral Sir Charles Vinicombe Penrose, who was promoted to Commander-in-Chief of the British Mediterranean Fleet in 1814. The urn bears an inscription to the lower pedestal above the figured paw feet: PRESENTED TO ADMIRAL SIR CHA.s. V. PENROSE K.C.B. BY CAPTAIN EDW.d. COLLINS, R.N. AS A TESTIMONY OF HIS HIGH ESTEEM. The notation KCB after his formal rank denotes his recipience of the Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath. Admiral Penrose's family crest along with the Order of the Bath's crest are also engraved to the front of the body above the spout, with the motto TRIA JUNCTA IN UNO (Latin for "Three joined in One" in reference to the unifying of England, Scotland, and Ireland). Penrose served in the Royal Navy from 1775-1819 and commanded such ships at the HMS Cleopatra, HMS Resolution, HMS Carnatic, HMS Lynx, and HMS Sans Pareil. The presenter, Edward Collins, obtained his first commission with the Royal Navy in 1800 and served as a flag-lieutenant under Vice Admiral Penrose.
