Hotchkiss & Cie was a French arms company most notable for its invention of the Hotchkiss revolving cannon and gas-actuated machine gun. Insufficient profits around the turn of the 20th century prompted the company to augment its machinery to produce a newer commodity--luxury automobiles. The first Hotchkiss car produced was a 17 horsepower four-cylinder model which debuted in 1903 and was soon followed in 1906 by a six-cylinder model. The crossed cannon logo the first Hotchkiss car bore, as well as that on the present lot, was an homage to the company's manufacturing heritage. In addition to town cars and sedans, the company produced successful racing cars over the next decades winning the Rallye Automobile Monte Carlo six times. Master silversmith Emile Langlois crafted the present lot between 1905-1925, and Hotchkiss probably special ordered the pair for a patron of the AD, AD6, AF or AG series.
The Rococo-style coolers having wavy inverted pyriform bodies, embellished throughout with scrollwork and foliate flourishes, front to each with Hotchkiss Paris logo encased among scrollwork, raised on conforming stepped base.
