An Elkington & Co. Victorian Figural Enameled Silver-Plated Centerpiece, Birmingham, England, circa 1864
    Designed by Albert Wilms
Marks: PUBLISHED BY ELKINGTON & CO., 753, (various)
    16-1/4 x 11-7/8 x 11-7/8 inches (41.3 x 30.2 x 30.2 cm)

Elkington's electroplated creations can mirror the best sterling silver of the day, which is the case here. This example, designed by Albert Wilms, head of Elkington's design studio 1855-1899, features three figures representing the Olympian goddesses Demetra, Athena, and Cybele standing in an elaborate Pompeian-inspired enameled stand. The presence of enamel work on sterling work is rare, and on electroplated wares, even more so. In 1862, Elkington presented a service in this pattern at the world's fair in London, earning Wilms a medal for artistic merit.

Condition Report*: Missing staff to goddess with orb, possible missing staff or baton to goddess with wreath, one skirt to lower rim is loose, light denting to upper and lower rims, light scratches indicative of use, polishing and age.
