Description

An Andrew Ellicott Warner Silver Ewer, Baltimore, Maryland, mid-19th century
Marks: A. E. WARNER, 11
14 x 8-3/8 x 5-1/2 inches (35.6 x 21.3 x 14.0 cm)
1137 grams (36.56 troy ounces)
Inscription: HLD / From Uncle W. R. Davis, April 1875 / 1875 W. R. D. to H.D.E. / 1925 Hallie to Mattie

The ewer was originally a wedding gift given in April 1875 by William Robinson Davis to his niece, Hallie Davis, and her husband, Stephen Benton Elkins, who would later become a U.S. Senator from West Virginia. Hallie Davis was the daughter of Henry Gassaway Davis, a prominent West Virginia railroad tycoon and U.S. Senator. The legacy of both families lives on through the Davis and Elkins mansions-Graceland and Halliehurst-built in the 1890s and still standing today on the campus of Davis & Elkins College in West Virginia.
In 1925, Hallie Davis Elkins passed the ewer down to her cousin and good friend, Mattie Louise Davis Downey, with the inscription 1925 Hallie to Mattie.
