Description

A Russian Seven-Piece En Plein Enameled Silver Solitaire
Ovchinnikov, Moscow, 1875
4-5/8 x 6-1/2 x 3-3/4 inches (11.7 x 16.5 x 9.5 cm) (tallest, covered teapot)
1526 grams

Comprising an individual covered teapot, covered sugar, milk pitcher, cup, saucer, teaspoon and sugar tongs, all with en plein floral enamel painting.

Renowned for its enamelwork and revival of Russian styles, the firm of Ovchinnikov earned numerous awards, including the Legion of Honor (Paris, 1867) and the Iron Cross (Vienna, 1873). From 1865, Ovchinnikov supplied the Imperial Court and opened a St. Petersburg branch in 1873. A jewelry school he founded trained 130 artisans, winning a silver medal at the 1882 exhibition.

The offered lot, dated 1875, comes from this period of exceptional international popularity for the firm. The solitaire, with its delicately enameled floral motifs which recall Meissen porcelain painting may well have been created with foreign buyers in mind, as it lacks any intrinsically Russian motifs, and relies on foreign forms. The work belongs to a very small group of similarly decorated enamels in this technique: please see also Cigar case from 1878 decorated with white briar roses sold Bonham's Knightsbridge, October 8, 2019, lot 217, and another in gilt silver enameled with a spray of lilies of the valley from the Nelkin collection sold in these rooms, May 17, 2024, lot 82127.
