Objects in the form of Guards regiment helmets were a popular form in late 19th century Russia as gifts for members of the regiments themselves. Stirrup cups such as these were likely commissioned as gifts for officers, or for use by the regiments themselves. Examples by almost all of the major makers survive: Faberge, Grachev, Ovchinnikov, and Nichols and Plinke are all recorded as having made related examples. The offered lot, however, is of unusually high quality, and retains its original gilding and enamel. Georges Delavin was a Frenchman recorded as working in Moscow at the turn of the century, and his rendering exhibits a clarity and refinement lacking from some produced by more famous Russian makers. This appears to be the only recorded work of this type by this maker.
Estimate: $8,000 - $12,000.
