A Romanov Tercentenary Diamond-Set and Translucent Lilac-Enameled Presentation BroochPossibly Morozov, Unknown Maker's Mark N.S., St. Petersburg, 1908-1917, circa 1913
1-5/8 x 1-1/8 inches (4.1 x 2.9 cm)
14 grams (0.45 troy ounces)
PROVENANCE:
Private collection, Virginia.
A related example with a similarly-designed Crown of Monomakh-was presented by Empress Alexandra Feodorovna to her lady-in-waiting, Baroness Sophie Buxhoeveden (illustrated in Prince Michael of Greece, Jewels of the Tsars, 2006, p. 134). Another example with similar crown of Monomakh and also of modified Scythian Revival Style was sold Sotheby's London, Russian Works of Art, Fabergé and Icons, December 1, 2009, lot 569.
Among the various craftsmen supplying the Imperial Cabinet between 1908 and 1917, the firm of Morozov made an impressive number of pieces for the Romanov Tercentenary Celebrations of 1913, of which the offered lot is presumably an example. Their refined yet distinct stylistic approach differs notably from that of other contemporary workshop. Morozov is known to have often employed subcontractors. The unidentified maker bearing the mark N.S.. may have worked under Morozov's direction.
