PROVENANCE:
Sotheby's London, Russian Sale Works of Art and Faberge, November 27, 2007, lot 531;
Bukowski's Helsinki, International Spring Auction, May 13-14, 2009;
Fabergé Heritage Collection, Inv. No. 6.

The offered lot may have been drawn from an 18th century model, as other iterations of this form are known to exist. There were several large services in the Louis XVI style commissioned by the Russian Imperial family, most notably a toilet service proposed for the imperial cabinet, (cf. von Habsburg, G., Fabergé Imperial Craftsman and his World, Booth-Clibborn, London, 2000, p. 120, fig 193) For a similar pair of Louis XVI Revival two-light candelabra also by Rappoport in the Cleveland Museum of Art, see Géza von Habsburg, Fabergé in America, 1996, cat. 72.
