A Large Tiffany & Co. Special Hand Work Silver Humidor, Attributed to Arthur Leroy Barney, New York, New York, circa 1928
Marks: TIFFANY & CO., 21134Y, MAKERS, 5383, STERLING SILVER, 925-1000, M, SPECIAL HAND WORK
    5-1/2 inches high x 16 inches wide x 8 inches deep (14.0 x 40.6 x 20.3 cm)
    219.84 troy ounces (gross)

The humidor with slotted cedar interior, crisply molded renaissance revival strapwork and floral patterning to the exterior of the case, with a bare cartouche to the lid and lozenge-form cartouches to front and obverse of the case, front engraved CHRISTMAS 1928, hinged angular handles to either side, raised on eight stepped feet.

Tiffany & Co. used the SPECIAL HAND WORK stamp to recognize the rare and exceptional quality pieces created by the firm during the early 20th century. This line of hand-raised silver was introduced in response to the popularity of labor-intensive silver objects during the Arts and Crafts Movement. Tiffany distinguished its wares by using an unusually heavy gauge silver in its SHW line.

A similar humidor, also attributed to Barney and auctioned by Sotheby's in 2015, exhibits a rounded lid and was presented to National Director of the U.S. Treasury Theodore R. Gamble in 1946 for his efforts raising war bonds in World War II.

Note: This lot is accompanied by an insurance appraisal completed by Butterfield & Butterfield in 1987.

Condition Report*: Gouging to the thumb press to the lid, the box may have been previously lacquered, some light scuffing to wooden interior, micro spotting to underside which may indicate pitting, hinge screw cover missing to one side, otherwise in good condition and presents well with surface scratches indicative of age, use and polishing.
