    A Large Erik Magnussen Modern American Silver Center Bowl and Weighted Silver Candlesticks for Gorham, Providence, Rhode Island, designed 1928

    27.43 troy ounces (weighable, bowl)

    The bowl with stepped lip rim above incised triglyphs to the metope, stepped standard and base with corresponding decoration, raised on four incised flattened bun feet, the pair of weighted candlesticks with matching motif and columnar standards. All retailed by Spaulding Company, Chicago, Illinois.

    Danish maker, Erik Magnussen (1884-1961) had been hired by Gorham in 1925 to help bring the company into the Modern era. Magnussen responded by creating the simplified Modern American series, which included this limited production set as well as other silver accoutrements.

    The same model of the Modern American bowl is in the collection of the Dallas Museum of Art, accession number 2002.29.29.

    Condition Report*: Missing bobeches to the candlesticks, slight pushes to the standards of both candlesticks (one does not sit quite flush) and light nicking to the stepped bases, missing floorplate to one candlecup, dents to the base and to the candlecup of one; light scratches and a few pin dents to the interior of the bowl, otherwise presenting well with light surface scratches indicative of age, use and polishing.
