    Marks: J.C.M., 3, BALL, THOMPKINS & BLACK

    LITERATURE:
Hood, Graham. American Silver: A History of Style. 1650-1900. E. P. Dutton, Boston, Massachusetts, 1989, pages 220-221.

According to Hood, "It is virtually identical to a set (for the same retailer, presumably by the same maker) that was chosen for inclusion in the New York Exhibition of 1853 and that was made entirely of California gold at a cost of five thousand dollars."

PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF DR. & MRS. HAROLD EKLUND, DES MOINES, IOWA

The baluster-form pitcher with allover chased repoussé grapevine decoration, naturalistically modeled branch-form trifurcated handle, raised on a spreading circular foot, monogrammed SCJC. Originally retailed by Ball, Thompkins & Black, New York, New York.

Condition Report*: Small dent to one of the repoussé leaves, minor rubbing to the monogram, otherwise with surface scratches commensurate with age and indicative of light use.
