Hennig Koppel began working for Georg Jensen in 1947, purposefully entering the applied arts as a sculptor. In the career that followed, he created a new idiom, designing strong forms that were above all else beautiful in an age where designing for function was the ideal. Practicality was not his concern, and his designs pushed the silversmiths in new directions. The fish dish, with its studied curve, thickening of the lips evoking quality and weight, and precisely fitted dome and base, was heralded as impossible to create. In fact, the piece took master silversmiths 500 hours to complete, its cost the equivalent of a fine silversmith's annual salary. Leading museums worldwide clamored to add the dish to their permanent collections. The end product was the perfection envisioned by Koppel.
