The special order vase hand hammered and of bottleneck-form, with applied naturalistic branch to everted rim, repoussé leafy vines throughout vase emanating from circular foot; monogrammed RS.

Included with this lot is a copy of the report by the design historian Samuel Hough, based on Gorham costing slip (box 25) records. According to Hough, the record states that this vase was a sample, a one-of-a-kind prototype, made November 27, 1908 from twenty-three troy ounces twelve pennyweight of silver costing $16.52. Some of the silver was cast for the base, taking 1-1/2 hours. Most of the silver was drawn, and spun. The prepared silver went to a silversmith for assembly, requiring 8 hours. The vase was then chased, requiring 17-1/2 hours. Finally the vase was bobbed, oxidized and finished. The total of silver and labor costs was $32.31, with a final price of $48.
