Inscription: PRESENTED TO William Combe BY THE EMPLOYEES OF THE 14th ST. STATION MANHATTAN BRANCH OF THE CONSOLIDATED GAS CO. OF NEW YORK on his retirement as SUPERINTENDENT, MARCH 1st 1886.

The presentation mug commemorates William Combe, the longtime superintendent of the Manhattan Glass Light Company's 14th Station (one of the companies that merged to form the Consolidated Gas Company in 1884). Combe's crew honored him with a silver service at a ceremony on March 1886, attended by Gen. Charles Roome, then president of Consolidated Gas.
