    Description

A GEORGE III SILVER GILT AND ENAMEL FITTED PATCH BOX
Unknown maker, probably London, England, circa 1800
    2-3/4 inches long (7.0 cm)
    9.3 ounces (gross)

The silver gilt box with scroll motif and applied enameled monogram, lid interior with enameled motif upon satin lined ground, fitted interior containing five additional boxes and glass bottle with silver gilt lid, each monogrammed in enamel.

The fashion of wearing facial patches by both men and women reached its apex during the later years of the reign of George III. Made of felt, velvet, silk, taffeta, mouse skin or even leather, facial patches shaped into various forms were used not just as a beauty accent, but as a means of silent communication, either political or sexual in nature.

This lot is an extremely rare and highly detailed patch box, the initialed lids indicating the shape of the patch contained therein.
