Th House of Tatischeff is a Russian noble family whose genealogy is recorded in the ancient Barkhatnaia kniga, or "Velvet Book" of the nobility. Members of the Tatischeff family were listed in the genealogical books of the Moscow, Tver, Tula, Kostroma, Penza, and Saint Petersburg guberniya. A cadet branch was awarded a comital title in 1801 by Emperor Paul I. According to some genealogical records, their progenitor was Prince Vasily Yuryevich Tat-isch was son of Prince Yuri Ivanovich of Solomerech. He allegedly served as viceroy of Grand Duke Vasily I in Veliky Novgorod, though this is debated. In the 15th century, the Tatischeffs held minor roles, but by the late 1500s, Ignaty Tatischeff became royal treasurer. Later, family members served as generals, courtiers, and diplomats, including Alexey Tatischeff, a general-in-chief who died in 1760.
Nikolai Alexeyevich Tatischeff (1879-1948) was born into the nobility of the Tver province, the son of Poltava governor Alexei Nikitich Tatishchev and Princess Ekaterina Borisovna Meshcherskaya. Educated at the Aleksandrovsky Lyceum, he graduated in 1899 and began serving in the Cavalry Regiment as a cadet. He was promoted to cornet the same year and held various regimental positions, before serving in the Ministry of Justice. In 1905, he became adjutant to the Moscow Governor-General while remaining in the Cavalry Regiment. He later served as Lomzhinsk vice-governor and Yekaterinoslav vice-governor. In 1916, he was unexpectedly and briefly appointed as acting governor of Moscow but was dismissed after the February Revolution.
During the Civil War, Tatischeff served in the Armed Forces of the South of Russia and was appointed Governor of the Tauride. After emigrating to France, he lived in Paris, chaired the Imperial Alexander Lyceum Alumni Association, and died in 1948, buried in Batignolles Cemetery.
