Depicting Theodore ("Teddy") in his typical garb of neckerchief and jacket with epaulettes. Roosevelt served as one of the 1,250 members of the First U. S. Volunteer Calvary Regiment, known as the "Rough Riders," during the Spanish-American War (1898.) In 1899, Teddy published "The Rough Riders," the first installment of which was published in Scribner's in January of that year. At age 42 (1901), Roosevelt became the 26th President of the United States after the sudden death of President William McKinley.
