Drama, emotion, and movement are the hallmarks of the sculpture of Lorenzo Ghiglieri, an artist adept at both painting and sculpting who has coupled his personal experiences with a keen interest in and knowledge of the historic American West. With sculptures such as Where the Buffalo Roam and Trouble Behind, Ghiglieri shows that he has both an eye for historic detail and a knack for telling a compelling and adventurous story, while Chief Joseph is evidence of his ability to capture universal truths about the human condition. Chief Joseph led a band of Nez Perce in the late nineteenth century and fought a valiant, but doomed campaign to lead his people to political refuge in Canada. His poignant words announcing his intent to cease hostilities against the U.S. Cavalry pursuing his followers, "From where the Sun stands now, I will fight no more forever," have come to symbolize for many people the courage, dignity, and honor of Native American culture. Ghiglieri's sculpture is a vivid and eloquent representation of a particular individual, but also a symbol for perseverance in the face of overwhelming odds.

Where the Buffalo Roam harkens back to a period before Chief Joseph and other Plains tribes were removed from their ancestral lands. The sculpture, which is a study in frenetic action, depicts two mounted Indians racing behind a herd of buffalo at full gallop. The forward point of the sculpture depicts three buffalo plunging over a cliff-one of the Indian figures is cantilevered over the back of the sculpture, while the three buffalo are positioned similarly over the front edge. The overall effect of having these figures seemingly suspended in mid-air is to give a sense of powerful movement. In this piece, Ghiglieri has used a clever composition to heighten the dramatic effect of animals and people caught in a timeless battle.
