    HOLLIS WILLIFORD (American, 1940-2007)
    I Fly with the Drums
    30 inches (76.2 cm) high
Signed on feathered wing: Hollis Williford

When visitors arrive at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, one of the first things they see prior to entering the building is a monumental sculpture of a cowboy who has ended a long and trying day. The title of the piece is Welcome Sundown; the artist is Hollis Williford. When the museum was in the planning stages for a major addition to the original building, the staff and board wanted to feature the work of a few artists whom they thought were particularly adept at portraying the true sense of the American West, Williford was one of their first choices. A long time participant of the annual Prix de West exhibition and sale (and its predecessor, the National Academy of Western Art), Williford had already been honored with numerous awards at the museum and had received the museum's highest honor, the Prix de West purchase award, twice.
Williford is skilled in a variety of media from charcoal drawing to bronze sculpting. His subject matter varies across an equally wide range from studies of fly fisherman to cowboys. One of his primary subjects was that of Native American culture. These two highly representative sculptures show his skill at depicting the human figure with a fluid sense of motion.
