    LITERATURE:
    M. Smart and E.A. Gordon, A Flight with Fame: The Life and Art of Frederick MacMonnies with a Catalogue Raisonné of the Artist's Works, Madison, Connecticut, 1996, pp. 181, 296, no. 48, other examples illustrated.

MacMonnies' 1902 Boy and Duck is a replica of his original Boy and Duck Fountain, a "bronze fountain ensemble on yellow Sienna marble base, with six individual, bronze, water-spouting turtles" (M. Smart and E.A. Gordon, A Flight with Fame: The Life and Art of Frederick MacMonnies with a Catalogue Raisonné of the Artist's Works, Madison, Connecticut, 1996, p. 296). "In the 1897 Salon, MacMonnies exhibited . . . the life-size bronze version of Boy and Duck, which he had decided to give to Prospect Park in thanks for the patronage Brooklyn had given to him. McKim, Mead, and White had already placed an elegant marble balustrade at the pond in which he had waded as a child, and the surrounding glade had been renamed 'The Vale of Cashmere' by Grace Stebbins Chapin, wife of former Brooklyn mayor Alfred C. Chapin. On May 9, 1899, MacMonnies's life-size playful figures became the central fountain, splashed by water jets from ducklings near its base and turtles somewhat farther away. Boy and Duck remained in operation for about forty years. Every winter it was put in storage, but in 1941 it disappeared; only reductions survive" (Smart and Gordon, p. 181).

We are grateful to E. Adina Gordon, Ph.D., the leading MacMonnies scholar, for her invaluable cataloguing assistance. Dr. Gordon's research report accompanies the present work.
