LITERATURE:
M. Duty, Dave McGary: American Realism in Bronze, Ruidoso, 1997, p. 134.
Touch the Clouds is a portrait of the late nineteenth-century Miniconjou chief who fought alongside his famous Sioux cousin, Crazy Horse, at the Battle of Little Big Horn. It exemplifies McGary's facile ability to tell a story that is at once individual and universal. Here, precise historical details identify Touch the Clouds: he wears the eagle-feather war bonnet, fringed shirt, and bone breastplate of a warrior-chief, and, purportedly 7' tall in real life, he towers above the massive buffalo robe that he extends behind him. Additional features, such as Touch the Cloud's forlorn expression, proud upright stance and widespread arms, capture the complexity of the human spirit as well as of the period in which he lived. In 1998, McGary installed a 30'x15' version of Touch the Clouds at the Houston Astrodome, continuing to push boundaries through his large-scale projects.
