The nineteenth-century Wisconsin railroad town Mazomanie took its name from the Minnesota Sioux chief Mazomani, or Iron That Walks. Considered a friend of the region's white settlers, Iron That Walks was killed in 1862 near the Yellow Medicine River while trying to broker a truce between the U.S. Army and a band of Sioux led by Little Crow. For his portrait of Iron That Walks, McGary positions the figure in a contrapposto stance reminiscent of the classical sculpture he studied while a student in Italy. Here, the realism of the human form results from McGary's painstaking sculpting process: before casting, he first builds an armature onto which he successively shapes from clay a skeleton, then muscle and skin, and finally clothing.
