CHARLES MARION RUSSELL (American, 1864-1926)Will Rogers, posthumous cast circa 1950s
Bronze with patina
10-1/2 x 11 x 5-1/4 inches (26.7 x 27.9 x 13.3 cm)
Signed and monogrammed on base: CM Russell
As a boy in Oklahoma, Will Rogers worked as a cowboy on his family's cattle ranch in what was then the Cherokee Nation. At an early age, he learned to use the lasso as a tool for tending Longhorns. Rogers's skill with a lasso became legendary, and even warranted an entry in The Guinness Book of Records for lassoing three moving objects at once. Rogers became popular as a trick roping star of Wild West Shows and went on to Vaudeville, where he soon became more famous for his folksy observational comedy. Russell has chosen to depict Rogers not as a performer, but rather at ease in the saddle of his first career, with his hand resting on a rope coiled around his saddle horn.
