Soon after its opening in the mid 70's, Joia Boutique Ltd. became a destination in New York's East 60's and remained so for its twenty year lifetime. Joia was the brainchild of Carol Caver. Carol's personally selected inventory of Art Deco, vintage and collectible art, objects, sculpture, jewelry and clothing had a national and international following. Joia was also a neighborhood gathering place, a New York shop owned and run by a savvy New Yorker.
Carol moved to New York immediately after college. Her love affair with the city never ended. Carol's eye and taste were educated as she worked for Pan American Airlines, always returning to her New York home base. She used layovers to see and learn about shops, bazaars and street markets in city after city, country after county all over the world. These shops and markets were its inspiration and later became the sources for Joia's inventory.
The deep, narrow shop was a visual feast filled with objects of high and low pedigree. There were signed European Art Deco sculptures and ceramics sharing space with 50's kitsch California flamingo statues. Street market finds from England and France shared space with Midwest America swap meet kitchen ware. Victorian Mourning brooches, silver and turquoise bracelets, brightly colored costume jewelry, all displayed with equal care. Stepping inside Joia was like stepping inside a life-sized kaleidoscope--an explosion of color, texture, styles, artworks, the valuable and the whimsical side-by-side.
