    Private collection, California, circa 1950s;
    Thence by descent to the present owner.

    We are grateful to Colin Harrison for his help in cataloguing this lot. According to Dr. Harrison, the watercolor "is based on Palmer's sketches in Italy, in particular the monastery of La Vocatella near Corpo di Cava. Two similar compositions include the monastery, one listed in Lister's catalogue raisonné as no. 311, and another sold at Christie's 10 July 2012, lot 147. [The present lot] includes the monastery on the left of the extravagant white Gothic building."

    N.B. The title of this watercolor has been corrected after the catalogue was originally posted.

    It would indeed have been much simpler to work with a local auction house, and we had local options. But we never once regretted going with Heritage.
