Graves Mountain, Lincoln Co., Georgia, USA

This is a very large and very robust twinned crystal of the Titanium mineral Rutile from the classic locality at Graves Mountain, Georgia, the world's premier locality for Rutile crystals. They might be the largest fine symmetric crystals of Titanium species. Few large ones, like this specimen, are found so sharply twinned. Their sharp form and intense sub-metallic luster set them apart for Rutile's in this size range from other locales. Sadly, few large examples ever survived the Earth and mining. This massive crystal is nearly four and a one-half inches tall and three and one-half inches across. It displays superb luster at the top termination, where the twinning is evident, and on a few of the crystal faces. This big crystal also has a slight red sheen to it, that when strongly lit, is obviously more apparent. This famous locality has produced fine crystals since the mid-1800s. This sizeable example weighs 1,750 grams (3.85 pounds) in weight. This is a huge, dramatic crystal from an old collection, thought to have been purchased in the 1980s.
    Measurements: 4.45 x 3.74 x 2.87 inches (11.30 x 9.50 x 7.30 cm)
