Benefitting The Nature Conservancy: design for the living world
Burmese python and wood sole
Women's size 7
The ecological issues facing the Everglades really hit home for Florida based, Workshop International. The company was very committed to helping the Nature Conservancy show the public exciting ways to use Burmese Python in fashion.
Workshop International worked with a Florida exotic leather developer to source python leather that was harvested and finished locally. With the finished material, the product team worked to make a design that showcased the natural beauty of the snake skin and focused on the theme of the natural environment. The design incorporated a natural wood platform and heel from reforested hardwoods and an open sandal design appropriate for the local climate and culture.
Once the design was developed, technicians and artisans in the company's Brazil office worked with the materials to make a final prototype that met all technical and production standards. This process ensured that the best quality and comfort was built into the product showing that Florida Python can be effectively utilized in footwear for commercial use.
Design for a Living World asks us to think about the products we use-where they come from, how they are made and the impacts they have on our planet.
The Nature Conservancy invited ten designers to create new OBJECTS from sustainable MATERIALS sourced from the world. Wood, plants, wool and other organic materials were transformed into intriguing objects, revealing extraordinary stories about regeneration and the human connection to the Earth's lands and waters. Together, designers and consumers can reshape our material economy and help to advance a global conservation ethics by choosing sustainable materials that support, rather than deplete, endangered places.
