DescriptionALINE RENOIR'S POLYCHROME SILK KIMONO
THE RENOIR COLLECTION
Black with a print bodice and sleeves, this kimono was a gift to Renoir by Japanese artist Umehara [Ryuzaburo Umehara, 1888-1903]. Umehara was inspired by Renoir's works in the Musée du Luxembourg to such an extent that he visited Renoir in Cagnes-sur-Mer and was accepted as a student for two months. On Renoir's recommendation, he returned to Paris and studied at the Academie Ranson. He and Yasui are credited with bringing the new Western painting styles (Paul Cézanne, Pierre Auguste Renoir and Camille Pissarro) to Japan. Accompanied by a postcard of a group of Japanese artists visiting Les Collettes.
Collar to hem: 38 1/2", sleeve L: 12 1/2". Some tears.
