    A prominent early 20th-century east coast landscapist, Roy Henry Brown kept a winter studio in New York City and a summer studio in Wilton, New Hampshire. He began his career in Chicago as an illustrator for the Chicago Tribune. About 1900, he went to New York where he enrolled in the Art Students League and trained with Kenyon Cox (represented in the current auction) and George Bridgman. From 1907 to 1914, he lived in France, studying at the Academie Julian with Jean Paul Laurens, Rene Menard, and Jean-Francois Raffaeli, and painting the Breton coast. Brown worked both in oil and watercolor, and from 1939 to 1944, served as [resident of the American Watercolor Society and led the merger of that group with the New York Watercolor Club. He was also a full member of the National Academy of Design, where he served as vice president from 1949 to 1950.

    Condition Report*: Minor frame wear along top and left extreme edges; under UV exam, there appear to be multiple small, minor dots of inpainting in building facade at far left and in sky, particularly in upper left quadrant, the largest two spots being a 1/2-inch H-shape and a 1-1/4 inches horizontal line in sky near far left top edge.
