    Description

    ROBERT WILLIAM WOOD (American, 1889-1979)
    Hill Country, 1943
    Oil on canvas
    25 x 30 inches (63.5 x 76.2 cm)
Signed and dated lower right: Robert Wood / 1943
    Titled verso: Hill Country

Robert William Wood is an icon in American landscape painting, which historically has been called "The American School". Hill Country, 1943 shows the influence of two legendary early Texas artists-his teacher, Jose Arpa, and the Texas landscape Impressionist, Julian Onderdonk. Yet, Wood's Texas Hill Country does not seek to copy Onderdonk's iconic approach to the bluebonnet landscape, but it does capture the light, atmosphere, and grandeur of the Texas Hill Country in a way that few other artists have matched.
