    Rauschenberg's Shales (1994-95) were made using a fire-wax technique developed by Donald Saff of Saff Tech Arts, Oxford, Maryland, in which Rauschenberg's photographic images were transferred onto wax-covered canvases with encaustic.

    Condition Report*: Overall light surface soiling; a few long lines of craquelure, an inherent vice of the medium; a few spots where the wax is lifting; possible small losses to the wax throughout the work; all wear is typical of this series and is commensurate with age.
