    NOTE:
We wish to thank the Robert Longo Studio for assistance in cataloging this work.

Robert Longo has been fascinated by the iconography of power and violence, as can be seen in his wave drawings. Study of Phoenix is one of his quintessential small wave drawings where he captures a suspended, crescendo moment of exploding power and physical force, rendered in a deep velvety charcoal that is sharply contrasted with the white vellum background. Longo once said, "The waves were about nature becoming man. They're so animate, so much about power, and feelings we all understand about being overpowered, somebody rising up and taking over" (Galería Soledad Lorenzo, Robert Longo: Lust of the Eye, exhibition catalog, Madrid, 2003, p. 42).

Condition Report*: Smudges to the margins, most likely inherent to the work's creation; a 3 inch piece of tape adhered to the upper edge, not affecting the image; minor beveling along the edges; otherwise, there do not appear to be any major condition issues.
