It is my obligation to help save this world.
Such is the guiding principle behind the career of Rita Hoffman Shulak, teacher, painter, and environmentalist. A native of Iowa, Shulak received degrees from the University of Colorado and the University of Denver Graduate School and spent nearly three decades as an educator, translating her interests in art, drama, nature, and athletics into unique interdisciplinary curricula. While teaching, Shulak was also studying painting, and her deep respect for the environment--plants, animals, and varied geographic terrains--most influenced her subjects: seascapes, mountain landscapes, and floral still lifes, all executed with a vivid Post-Impressionistic palette and gestural brushwork. For example, Sparkling Cliffs Inlet, with its meticulous Pointillist technique, simultaneously pays homage to Georges Seurat's French coastal scenes and captures the beauty of the Pebble Beach area in California. In recent years, Shulak's travels have exposed her to Native American spirituality, which she has referenced in paintings like Indian in the Canoe, a depiction of Glacier Lake on Mount of the Holy Cross. An award-winning landscape photographer as well as a painter, Shulak, who resides in La Jolla, has exhibited works at the Athenaeum School of the Arts, La Jolla; the Rancho Santa Fe Art Guild; and the San Diego Juried Art Fair, among other institutions.
