Signed and dated lower right: R. Hambleton 03

Richard Hambleton, aka Shadowman, lit up New York's dangerous 1980s streets with darkness: "I painted the town black," he said. Basquiat and Haring followed the lead of this two-time Venice Biennale veteran; in 1982, the Village Voice called his creations "the most talked-about art in New York." His cats could stand in for his notorious elusiveness.
