    There is no denying it. Raymond Pettibon is a sports fan. Drawing from the sorrowful story of cultural icon Lou Gehrig, the artist's cartoon-inspired ink drawing recalls the look of spirited and proud baseball icons of the 1930's and 40's, however, with a cryptic narration.
    Pettibon grew up watching all sorts of different sports, but there was something about the game of baseball that he respected. He was an aspiring pitcher as a kid, and has been a devoted fan of the sport all his life. "There's a lot more nuances, not just in the game itself, but that's also important, too. My work on the subject does tap into some of the nuances of the game, but also it says a lot about what goes on off the field as well about the society in general." The contradiction of honored baseball figures wrapped in ominous language, may lend strongly to the tragic end of Pettibon's own pitching career, when he injured his arm throwing a pitch. From then on, he became a baseball spectator rather than a participant, causing sorrow.
    Pettibon has long created artwork that combines the visual arts with poems and rhetoric. He has asserted, "I spend a lot more time writing than I do drawing. I really wouldn't want to make that distinction or feel the need to separate the two or make excuses. The fact is, I make work that requires both." This particular poem about a character struggling with a diagnosis of Lou Gehrig's disease, 15 years after the icon's passing, provides an ominous juxtaposition to the stately and grand image of Lou Gehrig at bat. The strength in the language begins to lapse as the character becomes more accepting of the inevitable conclusion of his diagnosis will meet. This lends to a feeling of empathy for the larger-than-life Gehrig, as well as those not-so-large who struggle with ALS even now.
